We have received numerous questions about just how adult content would work with the DSN. I’m afraid that for the moment I have no easy answers, but I think that we have stumbled on a possible solution.
The problem with the way adult content is seen by Linden Labs is that while land can be marked ‘adult’, content itself cannot be marked adult, but it can still be seen as a cause for an Abuse Report. You can, through DSN, safely advertise a shop that contains adult content, if it is on adult land, because people who are not cleared for adult content just won’t be able to teleport in. But the sample itself may serve as the base for an Abuse Report, and we don’t want our customers to suffer from that, let alone don’t want to be on the receiving end of one ourselves — that is why we have a ‘no adult content in samples’ rule at the moment.
The problem could be solved by creating a special channel for adult items only, and while a capability to add extra channels exists (we can add two without recoding anything and much more if I spend some time rewriting things) the problem remains, because we would then need to make sure that only avatars cleared for adult content can subscribe to it, so that there’s no possibility of an AR. There is currently no easy way to do it in LSL, because two conditions make an avatar cleared for adult content — having payment info on file and being age-verified, and the latter is constantly reported as being too buggy to be used at all.
Nevertheless, Peter offered an interesting idea — if an avatar is on adult land, it is quite certain that it is cleared for adult content, or it just wouldn’t be there. Now it becomes a question of whether the lRequestSimulatorData function properly returns the status of a sim that is known to be adult. If it does, (or when it starts, for that matter) kiosks that are in adult sims will be able to subscribe people to an adult channel, while others will not, which will be a solution satisfying all of the requirements.
Just needs some experimenting. :)
